Summer is Here!

Eek! Summer is here!!

OK, honesty time… did you just do a happy “EEK” 🤩 or a cringe-worthy “EEK” 😬

While I love the change in routine and the laid-back feel of summer, I also find the need to cultivate new ideas to keep my kids engaged, positively interacting, and learning all summer long. We are all much happier (i.e. more ready for naps 😉 ) when we have done some silly activity all morning long.

But how do you preemptively figure out what activities to do?

Personally, I am a sucker for a great THEME!! I LOVE basing activities, books, outings, and even food around a fun theme! 😁 It is so fun and simple to find activities if you know what theme you want to do. And before you click to another website with a huge sigh while thinking “oh this is one of THOSE ladies”… hear me out 😄 If you pick a theme, there are activities already out there, ready for you to excel at, for any age or ability level. You just have to click a few buttons and download the free printable! LOL!

Of course, I am talking about Pinterest people! There’s a wealth of resources at your fingertips just waiting to make you mother-of-the-day (because let’s be real, striving for mother-of-the-year is way to much hard work… 😆) But I know, I know… they make it look easy… Here is the thing – it totally CAN be easy!

I have a wealth of ideas and I am going to be posting some great themed content all summer long to keep you at the top of your mothering game 🤩 I cannot wait to highlight some amazing and simple ways to activate your summer fun!

We are going to be going prehistoric with dinosaurs, cultivating our love for gardening and nature, venturing under the sea, going on epic journeys through fairy tale villages, blasting off to space, bringing Christmas cheer to all those around us, and so much more!

I cannot wait to take this adventure with you!

Growing Learners

When I named this blog it was a growing season and I kept thinking about the cycle of growing. You have to prepare the soil then tuck in a tiny seed. Then water and wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Add water. Add sun. And wait.

And wait.

And wait some more….

You get the idea… it is a LOT of waiting!

BUT if you can WAIT long enough, what happens?! Something GROWS. Literally over night you can go from apparently barren dirt to flourishing, thriving, tender sprouts! After that the growing can appear to happen before your very eyes!

The same thing happens with our kiddos when they are learning. We can demonstrate the same thing over and again to no apparent avail. But then, if we WAIT long enough and provide the right conditions, suddenly, magically, they bloom before our eyes!

There are so many life lessons tucked into this process of growing. It is an analogy that I use with my kiddos time and again as we learn about patience or practice a new skill. Practice makes progress. But it can still take TIME. And that is okay! Because you know what?! Something IS happening below the surface before you see the “fruit” of the labor on top of the soil. So kiddos young and old, hang in there, you WILL see a harvest if you continue to persevere!

Okay, obviously I could talk about this subject FOREVER, but let’s talk about some actual plants. 🤣  The hands-on experience of planting a seed can enable you to increase your reader’s vocabulary, work on locomotor skills, fine-tune fine motor skills, and even enhance their cognitive development. Don’t believe me? That’s okay 😉 Here is a little research* for you:

  • Planting seeds helps our young ones:
    • practice locomotor skills, body management, and hand-eye coordination.
    • practice fine motor skills such as grasping with whole hand and fingers.
    • get sensory stimulation through water play, digging in the dirt, and handling seeds.
    • grow their adventurous taste buds when sampling the “fruit” of their labor.
    • increase literacy skills and vocabulary
    • enhance cognitive development as they remember information and predict outcomes throughout the process.
    • strengthen bonds as they work together with you.

Planting seeds with your child, taking the time to nurture them, then seeing the amazing results can foster a lifelong love of growing things in your kiddo. In fact, a lifelong love for learning might just take root!! Furthermore, you will also learn more about your child during the planting process – how they think, what they like or dislike, and how capable your little gardener truly is.

What will you grow next?

Happy Growing!

I Am “Wheelie” Glad…

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

There are 2 types of people on Valentine’s. lol. Are you Joey?

In all honesty, I am a bit apathetic about Valentine’s Day. I ADORE my mister and my kiddos but never feel the need to have a day set aside to tell them. I am all about showing love in random acts of kindness throughout the year.

Case and point – about a week ago strawberries were on sale at the market and so I whipped up some chocolate-covered strawberries to celebrate making it through our Tuesday. 😁

It’s the little things, y’all!

Since I am not ALL IN for V-day, I completely blanked on my kiddo’s class valentines. 😳 So when the “reminder” came home Monday, I knew I better get to work.

For some strange reason, that I cannot fully explain, I am fundamentally unable to buy valentines from the store… so I needed something that was simple but FUN. And of course my kiddo had very specific opinions!

He knew it HAD to feature a RACE CAR like the one in his new favorite book!

Speed Machines from Look Inside Things That Go

With a little burst of creative inspiration at 5:30 this morning, I came up with something that we both LOVE! And because I totally relate to the last minute panic mixed with the desire to have something “homemade”, I am including a FREE PRINTABLE so you can print your own!!

Note those straight cut lines, friends. No one has time for intricate cutting!

And because CANDY is synonymous with VALENTINE’S DAY…. we added a lollipop “flame” to the back of the car. But, if you want a bunch of disappointed kids, you can leave this part out, of course…. 😜🤣

Happy Valentine’s All! And I TRULY am “WHEELIE” glad we are friends!
